On June 11, 2001, the Waterford Township Board of Trustees voted unanimously to establish a Veterans Memorial Committee for the purpose of raising funds, and then constructing a Veterans Memorial on the Civic Center campus to recognize all veterans who have served honorably in the 5 branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The committee of volunteers chose a design for a Veterans Memorial to be constructed in Waterford Township without spending tax dollars. Donations of money, materials, and labor were raised to construct the Memorial. This project has been totally supported by the community and donations.
Design
The Memorial was designed by Francis Mojica, a Waterford resident and 1988 Waterford Kettering graduate. The initial rendering was created by Hendel Maximore, then an architecture student at Lawrence Technological University. After 10 years of fund raising, and 2 years of construction, the Memorial was dedicated on June 4, 2011.
