[ARCHIVED] Waterford Township Announces New Police Chief

Scott Underwood

I am pleased to announce that the next Police Chief for Waterford Township has been selected. After a thorough process, the list was narrowed down to three excellent, well-qualified candidates. From those candidates, a new Chief was chosen.

I selected Scott Underwood, a retired Captain from the City of Warren Police Department to serve Waterford Township as its 9th Police Chief in the Department’s history. Mr. Underwood has a long and distinguished career in which he achieved the rank of Captain before retiring from the Warren Police Department in 2010. Since then he has worked in high-end security protection in the private sector. He comes highly recommended including Oakland County Commissioner Bill Dwyer, the former Police Chief in Farmington Hills and Police Commissioner in Warren and the present Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green.

Deputy Chief Jeff James has been the acting Police Chief for Waterford since September 25, 2014. He has done an outstanding job of leading the Waterford Police Department personnel who together have helped make Waterford the 5th safest large (50,000+) community in the State of Michigan. With nearly 29 years serving Waterford Township, Deputy Chief James plans to retire later this year. This will allow him to work with the new Chief during the transition period. I want to personally thank Deputy Chief James for his efforts and dedication to the Township, its residents and Police Department.

The role of Police Chief is a critical position in our Township. We are pleased to have a top-notch law enforcement professional like Scott Underwood join our already outstanding Police Department. As Township Supervisor, I’m truly excited about the future of not only our Police Department, but the entire Township as a whole. I am committed to our local Police Department and moving forward. We just keep getting better and will continue to do so.

The Waterford Township Board of Trustees will vote on Mr. Underwood’s appointment and contract at its regularly scheduled March 14, 2016 meeting at 6pm. This meeting will be held at Waterford Township Hall Main Auditorium 5200 Civic Center Drive.
