WELCOME TO THE 2020 CENSUS!

Everyone Counts
The goal of this census is to count every living person in the U.S. just once and in the right place. We need your help to make sure everyone in Waterford gets counted!

Census Data Are Important!
The U.S. Constitution requires a census every 10 years. The results are used to determine the number of seats each state has in Congress, draw boundaries for voting districts, and determine how more than $675 billion in federal funding is spent in communities each year.

Taking Part is Your Civic Duty
Completing the census is required; it is a way to participate in our democracy and say "I count!"

Your Information is Confidential
Federal law protects your responses. Your answers can only be used to produce statistics and cannot be used against you by any government agency or court.

Waterford Township Public Library - May News

In the interest of health and safety, all in-library programs and meetings have been cancelled until further notice.
Our staff are currently providing reference services by phone and email. They are also planning virtual programs. Check our website, www.waterfordmi.gov/library, for information databases we offer and sign up for Overdrive (Libby) and Hoopla to download eBooks, audiobooks and comic books or stream videos and music. You will need your library card to use these resources. Waterford and Lake Angelus residents who do not have a library card can get one remotely. Email Jonathan Deahl, jdeahl@waterfordmi.gov for details. Follow us on Facebook.

Virtual Summer Reading programs for Children, Teens and Adults
Staff are making plans to offer these online. The Wandoo Reader software application, familiar to many of our previous participants, will be used to register and record your reading over the summer and your goals reached. Incentives are an important part of this annual event and will remain so this year. Details available on the Library’s website and in our newsletter in June.

1,000 Books before Kindergarten
For children, infant to 5 years. We are a participating library in this early literacy program. You can participate online using phone apps for either iPhone or Android. Search under 1000 Books before Kindergarten. Read to your young child. For every 100 books that you read together, we will put your child’s name on our “Wall of Fame.” Once the Library reopens, your child can pick out a book to keep. Reach the 1,000-book milestone and get a book bag.

Census 2020 reminder
As mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the census is a once every-decade count of everyone living in the country. Getting a complete count is so important. When we know how many people live in our community, organizations and businesses are better equipped to evaluate the services and programs needed, such as clinics, schools, and roads. It also determines how seats in Congress are distributed among the 50 states. Anyone who has a hobby of researching their family tree knows the census is even important to future generations for that, too.
In Mid-March of 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau sent every household a postcard invitation to complete a simple questionnaire about who lives at your address beginning on April 1st. You can complete the questionnaire online, by phone, or by mail.
This year for the first time, people are encouraged to respond to the census online (from a phone, tablet, or computer) if they can. Responding online can be done any time through May. Responding by phone or mail will also be possible. NOTE: Federal law keeps those responses safe and secure.
It only takes a few minutes, but the impact of your response will be felt for years.
I count. You count. Everyone counts. GET COUNTED.

Laundry Safety Reminders

Doing laundry is most likely part of your everyday routine. However, did you know how important taking care of your clothes dryer is to the safety of your home? With a few simple safety tips you can help prevent a clothes dryer fire.

  1. Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional.
  2. Do not use the dryer without a lint filter.
  3. Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Remove lint that has collected around the drum.
  4. Rigid or flexible metal venting material should be used to sustain proper airflow and drying time.
  5. Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted and the outdoor vent flap will open when the dryer is operating. Once a year, or more often if you notice that it is taking longer than normal for your clothes to dry, clean lint out of the vent pipe or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.
  6. Keep dryers in good working order. Gas dryers should be inspected by a qualified professional to make sure that the gas line and connection are intact and free of leaks.
  7. Make sure the right plug and outlet are used and that the machine is connected properly.
  8. Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and do not overload your dryer.
  9. Turn the dryer off if you leave home or when you go to bed.
