Annual Earth Day Cleanup Event A Success!

Girl Scout Troop at Fish Hatchery Park
Mom and Son on Frembes Rd.
Corsairs along Crescent Lake Rd.

Waterford Township's 7th annual Earth Day Township Cleanup day was another successful event! More than 100 volunteers signed up to clear litter from Waterford's roadsides and parks. As luck would have it, we were fortunate to have an unseasonably sunny and warm 80-degree-day. The dedicated volunteers were able to clean up more than 18 cubic yards of trash helping improve the aesthetic of our beautiful Township, and keeping this litter from entering our precious waterways.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all of the volunteers who gave a few hours of their time to this event, it cannot happen without you! Thanks also belong to the following businesses who support this event year after year with donations:
Burke Building Center
GFL Environmental, USA
Great Lakes Ace Hardware on Highland Rd.
McNab's Hardware
Tenuta's Food Lane

Don't miss next year's event scheduled for April 22, 2023. We'd love to have your family, friends, neighbors, civic group, scouts, join us! Sign up now to save the date at www.waterfordmi.gov/earthday

Planning Begins for 20 Year Waterford Master Plan -
Stay Tuned for Community Engagement Opportunities

Waterford Township is creating its new Master Plan, a roadmap for the Township to direct future growth and development over the next 20 years. Community and stakeholder participation is essential to an effective plan. Stay tuned this month for events and opportunities to have input on this exciting and important initiative.

What is a Master Plan?
A Master Plan is a blueprint for the future. It is a community vision that will guide the Township for the next 20 years. The Master Plan will result in a set of policies that direct future growth and development. Additionally, the creation of a Plan can lead to potential strategies that will help effectively guide Township leaders as they make substantive and thoughtful decisions for the community.

What are the Contents of a Master Plan?
The Master Plan will outline Waterford Township’s existing conditions, describe future goals and objectives for development, and include an action plan on how to achieve these goals and objectives. The Waterford Township Master Plan will address the following topics:
  • Housing and Neighborhoods
  • Economic Development
  • Transportation and Mobility
  • Infrastructure and Utilities
  • Parks, Recreation, and Environment

Township Board Approves Streetlight LED Conversion Project 2022-23

In April, the Waterford Township Board of Trustees approved a proposal to complete the conversion of the remaining mercury vapor and high-pressure-sodium streetlights owned by DTE to LED technology over the next two years. Streetlights along Waterford's major corridors have already been converted to LED lighting through similar projects in the past few years.

With the approval of this project, in 2022 & 2023, DTE Energy will convert the remaining 631 streetlights to LED technology helping conserve energy, improve light quality, and cut costs.

News You Can Use

Water Main Work – South Cass Lake Rd
In preparation for the upcoming culvert replacement planned by Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), DPW is having a section of water main along S Cass Lake Rd relocated. Relocating the water main will ensure that RCOC can complete their project of replacing the culvert that carries S Cass Lake Rd over the Cass Lake/Otter Lake Canal. The water main relocation began on April 25th and is estimated to take approximately one month.

During the water main relocation, S Cass Lake Rd will be closed between Port Cove Dr and Bangor Rd. This closure will last for approximately one month, and traffic will detour from Cass Elizabeth Rd to Orchard Lake Rd utilizing Cooley Lake Rd, Hiller Rd, and Commerce Rd.

Fire Hydrant Flushing
Waterford Township DPW has begun the spring round of fire hydrant flushing; at this time DPW is not servicing all fire hydrants. Fire hydrant flushing is important to ensure water quality. Staff will be performing this work in the evenings after normal business hours over the next couple weeks.

The hydrant flushing process will stir up sediment in the water mains which can cause your water to appear brown, if this occurs run cold water in your bathtub or laundry tub to clear any sediment that has been stirred up. If you notice or hear of crews in your area performing this work, DPW recommends you avoid doing laundry until the crew is finished and you have verified that your water is running clear to prevent staining and/or hindering the performance of your washing machine.

Attention all Lawn, Landscape and Garden Enthusiasts:
As you start planning your spring landscape and gardening projects, consider having a second water meter installed. This second meter is used to register the outdoor water use for your property. If outdoor water use is measured separately, the DPW will not bill for the sewer portion of that water, because the water used for outdoor watering is not entering the sewer system. The sewer cost is the largest portion of your quarterly bill and having a second meter installed could provide significant cost savings depending on your outdoor water habits.

Current cost for a 5/8” sprinkler meter is $224 and quarterly charges are $13.62 for the first 1,000 cubic feet of use and $3.04/100 cubic feet over 1,000. Questions about past water use, purchasing a sprinkler meter or to schedule an appointment please call 248-674-2278.

Carbon Monoxide Detection Information
From The Waterford Regional Fire Department

Carbon Monoxide Testing

What is carbon monoxide?

Carbon monoxide, also known as CO, is called the “Invisible Killer” because it's a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. More than 150 people in the Unites States die every year from accidental nonfire-related CO poisoning associated with consumer products, including generators. Other products include faulty, improperly-used or incorrectly-vented fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, stoves, water heaters and fireplaces. Source: Consumer Product Safety Commission

Know the symptoms of CO poisoning
Source: Consumer Product Safety Commission
Because CO is odorless, colorless, and otherwise undetectable to the human senses, people may not know that they are being exposed. The initial symptoms of low to moderate CO poisoning are similar to the flu (but without the fever). They include:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
High level CO poisoning results in progressively more severe symptoms, including:
  • Mental confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of muscular coordination
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Ultimately death
