worker installing a streetlight

Waterford IS NOW A 100% LED STREETLIGHT COMMUNITY

With the recent completion of the conversion of Waterford's remaining streetlights through the DTE Community Lighting Program, Waterford Township is now one of only six large communities in South East Michigan to achieve 100% LED streetlighting! Waterford has more than 3,000 streetlights. LED lights are more cost effective to operate, they don't burn out as often as mercury-vapor lighting, they improve public safety, and reduce our carbon footprint.

DPW prides itself on providing our customers with safe, quality drinking water and is proud to present our 24th Drinking Water Quality Report. This report includes details regarding where our drinking water comes from, what it contains and how it compares to standards set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

Water Tower Painting

The water tower and elevated water storage tank located at the corner of Walton Boulevard and Main Street is in the process of being cleaned and repainted. The Main Street water tank has been part of Waterford’s water system since 1962 and has a storage capacity of 750,000 gallons.  This important project will help prolong the life of this important part of Waterford’s water system. When complete this water tower will match the recent repainting of the water tower and elevated storage tank on Cass Lake Road.

Residents may notice several trees have been removed, existing antennas have been temporarily relocated and a section of fence has been temporarily removed for the duration of the project. It is imperative for their own safety and that of workers on the site, that residents, their families, friends and pets do not enter the site once the fence has been removed.

SLOW DOWN IN SCHOOL ZONES

SCHOOL STARTS MONDAY, AUGUST 28TH

Don't forget, school starts in Waterford on Monday, August 28th.

This is an exciting and somewhat chaotic time for many Waterford families and the community as we wind down our summer vacations and return to the classrooms.

As the school year begins, please be on the lookout for students walking to and from school. Motorists are reminded to obey all traffic laws and posted speed limits, and please be extra cautious around school zones. Anticipate additional traffic near schools and plan extra time into your commute if necessary.

Drivers should also refresh their responsibilities regarding stopping for school buses.

School bus safety tips for drivers from the Michigan State Police:

  • Prepare to stop when a slowing bus has its overhead yellow lights flashing
  • Stop at least 20 feet away from buses when red lights are flashing, unless driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway
  • Slow down in or near school and residential areas
  • Look for clues-such as safety patrols, crossing guards, bicycles, and playgrounds-that indicate children might be in the area
  • Watch for children between parked cars and other objects

School buses are like traffic signals:

  • When overhead lights are flashing yellow: Prepare to stop
  • When overhead lights are flashing red: Stop
  • When hazard warning lights are flashing: Proceed with caution

School bus safety tips for students:

  • Always stay in sight of the bus driver
  • Don't hurry off the bus; check traffic first
  • Don't go back to the bus after exiting
