holiday safety reminders from the waterford regional fire dept.

  • Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns. Make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be knocked down easily.
  • Read manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect.
  • Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell and feel like real candles.
  • Inspect holiday lights each year before you put them up. Throw away light strands with frayed or pinched wires.
  • Water your Christmas tree every day. A dry Christmas tree can burn very hot and very fast.
  • Make sure your tree is at least 3 feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles or heat vents. Also, make sure your tree does not block exits.
  • Get rid of your tree after Christmas or when it is dry.
  • Check all holiday light cords to make sure they aren’t frayed or broken. Don’t string too many strands of lights together—no more than three per extension cord.
  • If are buying an artificial tree, look for the fire-resistant label. When putting it up, keep it away from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat.
  • If getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and water it to keep it fresh. Bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off.
  • If using older decorations, check their labels. Some older tinsel is lead-based. If using angel hair, wear gloves to avoid irritation. Avoid breathing in artificial snow.
  • When decorating outside, make sure decorations are for outdoor use and fasten lights securely to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid an electrocution or fire hazard.
  • If using a ladder, be extra careful. Make sure to have good, stable placement and wear shoes that allow for good traction.
  • Don’t use electric lights on metallic trees.
  • Don’t forget to turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house.
  • Keep children, pets and decorations away from candles.
  • If hanging stockings on the fireplace mantel, don’t light the fireplace.

Important "snowbird" reminders

Attention all “Snowbirds”!  Don't forget to do a few important items before you leave town for your seasonal home away from Waterford.

Assessing: Please contact the Waterford Assessing Department with your forwarding address if you are leaving town for the Winter.  Even though you may have your mail forwarded by the U.S. Post Office, property tax bills and assessments notices are not forwarded and are returned to the Township.  Please call 248-674-6270 to let us know your Winter address.  In the alternative, you may submit an Address Change online at the following link:  https://www.waterfordmi.gov/FormCenter/Assessing-15/Address-Change-Form-75

Department of Public Works: Please contact Waterford DPW at 248-674-2278 to schedule to have water turned off to your home before you leave for the winter. Appointments for turn off are scheduled for an exact date and time for a technician to come out.

Turning the water off at the road is a safeguard against frozen pipes and will save you money as billing is suspended while the water is off. A $30 turn-off charge is assessed and a $30 turn-on charge will be assessed when water is turned back on in the spring.

GFL Curbside Collection: Waterford's designated residential curbside waste hauler program with GFL Environmental includes an option for residents to suspend service for one consecutive period each 12-month period for up to three consecutive months for an invoice credit. To utilize this option for three months while you're at your seasonal residence away from Waterford, please contact GFL at the phone number designated for Waterford customers 248-204-6762.

Election Mail: If you will be at another address for the Presidential Primary, please contact us during the first week of January by calling 248-674-6266 and let us know where you will want your ballot mailed. Absentee ballots will be mailed around January 18, 2024, and cannot be forwarded by the USPS. They will be returned to the Township Clerk’s Office.

Those attending the workshop will be prepared to discuss their own writing, as well as providing edits and suggestions on other member’s writing. The Assessing Department and Michigan Department of Treasury are reminding U.S. Military Veterans (or un-remarried surviving spouses), deemed to be 100% disabled as the result of military service, that they must file an affidavit along with supporting documentation with Waterford Township confirming eligibility for property tax relief.

Applications for the 2024 tax year will be accepted beginning January 1, 2024 through December 31, 2024. Please note that the State Tax Commission has recently approved a NEW application form for 2024 that's available both on our website by following the link and in our office. www.waterfordmi.gov/assessing

In addition, beginning with the 2025 application, the disabled veterans exemption will remain active for succeeding years without reapplying until the veteran or their spouse moves from the property or rescinds the exemption.
