A Message from Our Library Director
Please consider this a personal invitation to attend the 60th Anniversary Open House Celebration of Waterford Township Public Library on Saturday, March 15 from 2pm-4pm. There is no registration nor cost. Drop in anytime between those hours. If so inclined to donate, we are collecting items for Waterford Community Coalition’s hygiene bags that are distributed throughout our community. Items such as new, unopened regular or travel size containers of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, and mouthwash will all be gratefully accepted at the door the day of the event.
The library, located at 5168 Civic Center Drive, opened to the public on March 15, 1965. It looked much different then, but there are still similar architectural elements and it is fun to look at the older pictures and see if you can see where they were taken in our current building. Furthermore, there have been two major renovations of this building since 1965 (1994 and 2004) and the footprint has changed drastically. Even the orientation of the front door has changed!
But at its core, it remains the same - a public building in the middle of Waterford Township, with materials, programs, and services to serve the residents and other visitors. The staff has always had great customer service as a top priority and are happiest serving the patrons and helping them use the library to its best advantage.
So please attend if you are able. We will have activities, displays, refreshments, and giveaways. All ages will find something to do at the Open House and while you are here, pick up a book or two, find a puzzle to take home from our puzzle exchange, or check out the changes since your last visit.
Leading up to the event on March 15, take a look at our social media posts on Facebook or Instagram. 60 Ways to Use your Library will be featured daily (2 per day). The staff came up with these suggestions, but we welcome your comments on the ways you use your public library. Let us know!
After March 15, we will continue celebrating our 60th anniversary all year. We have new parking lot banners installed celebrating the library that has been here since 1965. We will be using our 60th anniversary logo on all of our flyers and information pieces too. The staff are wearing buttons that have the logo as well and on March 15th you will see all staff proudly wearing their 60th anniversary t-shirts.
We are so grateful for the support from all who voted for the library’s community tree in the Holiday Extravaganza Festival of Trees. The library came in 2nd place and a check for $500.00 was presented to the Friends of the Library by the Committee and the sponsors including Security Credit Union. These funds will help support costs associated with our community celebration on March 15.
As stated previously, if we have not yet met, please feel free to stop by the library during open hours or shoot me an email at mailto:jschaefer@waterfordmi.gov. I would love to chat and connect. I am interested in hearing how we can all work together to meet our common goal – to continue to meet the needs of the community for the next 60 years.
Or stop me on March 15 (have I mentioned that date enough now?) while you are at the Open House and say hello. If anyone out there remembers visiting the library back in 1965, or around that time, we would love to hear about that!
Most sincerely,
Julie Schaefer

Mood and Energy Enhancing Lights
The library recently purchased four Mood and Energy Enhancing Lights. These lights have been placed throughout the library to be used by our patrons. People with mild to moderate Winter Blues or sleep and circadian rhythm issues might find some relief after using one.
Puzzle Exchange
Attention Jigsaw Puzzlers! We have a Jigsaw Puzzle Exchange. It is on shelves in our magazine room. The idea is to take a puzzle and/or leave a puzzle. (Or two, or three). Uneven exchanges are fine. Please leave no more than three puzzles at a time as our space is limited. The puzzles you leave must be in good condition, in the original box, and missing no pieces. If you need some new puzzles to work on, we hope this helps!

When widow Frances Lacey was murdered in July 1960 on Mackinac Island, only a few meager clues were found by police, and the case soon turned cold.
