Holiday Safety Reminders From the
Waterford Police Department

This Holiday season, the Waterford Police Department would like to remind everyone about some Holiday Crime Prevention Tips.
Please Remember:

  1. Lock your vehicle and put up your windows even while you are driving.
  2. When parking your vehicle to go shopping, remember where you parked and lock your vehicle.
  3. Park in a well lit and traveled area. Do not park in a remote dark area.
  4. When returning to your vehicle, make sure you are not being followed. Scan the interior of your car to be sure no one is inside.
  5. Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle so you are ready to unlock the door and will not be delayed.
  6. When storing items purchased at the stores, place them out of sight. The best place is in the trunk.
  7. Do not leave valuable items in the vehicle that can be observed from the outside.
  8. Don’t chase someone who robs you, they may have a weapon, instead call 911.
  9. If you go to an ATM check for people around and make sure it is well lit and a safe location.
  10. Carry only the credit cards you need and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  11. If you make a purchase with your credit card, be sure to obtain a receipt.
  12. Beware of the “Good Deal” scams. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  13. When purchasing small toys for children, be sure that they are safe and can’t be swallowed.
  14. Drive defensively. Traffic is heavier during the holiday season. Drivers may also be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  15. With these tips, the Waterford Police Department is wishing everyone a safer holiday shopping experience and season.

Hear the beep where you sleep, every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm

Hear the Beep Where You Sleep - Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Keep your family safe with a working smoke alarm in every bedroom. Check the batteries in your smoke alarms, too. Some families like to check and change batteries every spring and fall at Daylight Savings Time to help them remember.

Did you know that roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep?

Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half!

When it comes to smoke alarms, it’s about “location, location, location”. The key message of this year's Fire Prevention campaign, is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms.
