Waterford Insider Late April 2024

waterford's annual Earth Day township cleanup event a success!

A big Waterford shout-out to all the volunteers and donors who pitched in to make Waterford's 9th annual Earth Day Township Cleanup event a success!

It was a chilly, windy, overcast day with a few snowflakes to remind us that it’s not quite Spring in Waterford yet, but still, 136 volunteers came out to help in cleanup efforts in dozens of locations across the Township. We estimate they collected approximately 25 cubic yards or 10 truckloads full of litter on Earth Day 2024! When you consider that most of the trash we’re filling these bags and trucks with are small items like paper, plastic, straws, plastic and glass bottles, etc., that is a pretty incredible accomplishment for which they should all feel proud!

Thank you, also, to these generous donors for providing supplies:
Gordon’s Food Service – bottled water
GFL Environmental – dumpsters
McNab’s Hardware - gloves
The Miller Family – gloves, pickers
Tenuta’s Food Lane – bottled water

Waterford Regional Fire Department Chief Matthew Nye

welcome waterford regional fire dept.  new fire chief, matthew nye

Waterford Township has appointed Fire Chief Matthew Nye as the 13th Chief in Waterford Regional Fire Department History.

Chief Nye takes his seat at the helm following the retirement of Chief Matthew Covey, who served for 33 years.

“Waterford Township is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Nye to the role of Fire Chief for the Waterford Regional Fire Department,” said Gary Wall, Waterford Township Supervisor. “Matt’s experience in fire service and his continued advancement in his career have earned him the promotion to this important role in our community.”

Chief Nye began his career as a firefighter with the Pontiac Fire Department in April 1996, and joined the Waterford team in 2012 when the Waterford Regional Fire Department formed to serve the three communities of Waterford Township, the City of Pontiac, and the City of Lake Angelus.

“The unification of the Waterford and Pontiac Fire Departments in 2012 solidified my commitment to enhancing emergency services across a regional area,” said Chief Nye.

Chief Nye has held the ranks of Firefighter, Paramedic, Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, and now Fire Chief. He comes from a family of first responders including his great-grandfather, two great-uncles, grandfather, father, and brother who all worked for the Pontiac Fire Department; and a great-uncle who worked for the Pontiac Police Department.

With a legacy of civil service and his commitment to leading the department in providing fire protection and EMS services, Chief Nye says he’s ready to get to work.

“I am excited to learn how to fit in with an already established team that has always prioritized community safety,” said Chief Nye. “It takes a collaboration with local agencies and stakeholders to implement innovative strategies to address emerging challenges.”

Waterford Regional Fire Department is one of the largest staffed fire departments in Oakland County. Resources include nine fire stations staffed 24 hours a day, 10 fully-equipped fire engines, eight state-of-the-art Advanced Life Support EMS rescue vehicles, two 100-foot aerial ladder trucks and a 75ft quint, two mobile command vehicles with on-board computer and communications system, 107 full-time highly-trained firefighters, of which 105 are licensed paramedics.

Waterford Library Director Julie Schaefer

Welcome waterford's  new library director julie schaefer

Waterford Township has appointed Julie Schaefer as the Director of the Waterford Township Public Library.

The position of Library Director has been vacant since the retirement of Joan Rogers in December 2023. Joan served for nearly 40 years of service at the Library, the last 19 of which were in the Director role.

Julie comes to Waterford Township from the Dearborn Public Library where she served in a variety of roles for more than 30 years, most recently as the Deputy Director for the past 15 years.

“We are happy to announce Waterford’s new Library Director Julie Schaefer,” said Waterford Township Supervisor Gary Wall. “We took our time to locate the right candidate for this important position for our community. Julie’s experience and passion for providing service and access to information for the community are a great fit for Waterford.”

Julie says she especially enjoys helping people find solutions and connections to people and organizations toward a common goal. She calls that connection “magic!”

“I love working with people of all ages and helping them find what it is they are seeking,” said Julie. “I truly believe the library is the hub of each community and it is a valuable resource for every resident and business in the community we serve.”

Julie plans to spend her early days in the new role learning what Waterford is doing and how it’s being done, then looking to the future to determine where it makes sense to grow and change, including a goal to expand service to Fridays.

With this, Julie extended an invitation to the community to provide input.

“I encourage everyone to stop by and say hello when you see me,” said Julie. “I would absolutely value knowing what you would like to see at your public library. If you don’t already have a Waterford Township library card, the fabulous staff will make that happen.”

The Waterford Township Public Library is located in the heart of the Township on Waterford’s Civic Center campus. The library serves residents of Waterford Township and the City of Lake Angelus, and is also a member of The Library Network library cooperative which helps expand access to materials across more than 50 libraries in Southeast Michigan. The library is open Monday – Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. To learn more about the abundant services and programs provided by the Waterford Township Public Library, visit their website at www.waterfordmi.gov/library.
