Flood Insurance Program

Identifying Flood Hazard Areas
A floodplain is an area adjacent to a river, stream, or waterway that may flood. In support of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) identifies flood hazard areas throughout the U.S. producing Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs).

Several areas of flood hazards are commonly identified on these maps.
